Competitors face 80-degree temperatures during White Lake Sprint Triathlon

Competitors face 80-degree temperatures during White Lake Sprint Triathlon

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It looks like another warm one is in store for competitors in this year’s White Lake Sprint Triathlon.

Last year, contestants dealt with temperatures in the 80s and this year it appears to be warm again with the temperatures expected to peak in the mid 80s during the afternoon Sunday. While not as hot as this week’s 90-degree temperatures, it will still be warm.

Cloud cover will be the saving grace for competitors, as we are expecting the high pressure center that has left things so uncomfortably warm to move off shore. This will at least help to open the door for some clouds and cooler air to help cool racers off for the bike and run.

It’s the first stage—the swim—that is most temperature-focused. According to the official USA Triathlon rules, competitors may wear wetsuits if the water temperature is 78 degrees or lower. Wetsuits actually help to reduce drag. But water temperatures as of this afternoon have moved over the 78-degree mark. That means no wetsuits.
