Promote literacy by reading to your child's class

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Plain View Primary School in Bladen County is celebrating Read Across America Day next week.

The event is being held Monday, March 4, 2013.

Any parents who would like to read to their child’s class should contact his/her teacher to arrange a time.

Read Across America helps promote literacy and reading.

Dream Team helps students get back on track with reading skills

Dream Team helps students get back on track with reading skills

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students from the Dream Team at East Bladen High School will work with second grade students to implement a reading intervention program.

According to the Bladen County Schools website, the BURST program is designed to help students who are not working at grade level in reading.

The Dream Team students will work with students in small groups every day with lessons that are designed specifically for them.

Monsanto makes donation to West Bladen High School

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Monsanto Chemical Company recently made a donation to West Bladen High School to be used toward providing more agriculture opportunities to the FFA chapter at the school.

The Monsanto Company is an agricultural leader on the local, state and national levels.

The FFA hosted a ceremony at the high school as part of National FFA week in which first and second year agriculture students were awarded with their Greenhand and Chapter FFA degrees as designated.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The monthly student attendance banners were awarded during the recent board meeting to the schools in the county with the best attendance.

According to the Bladen County Schools website, the winners as are:

Elementary School Division - With an average student attendance during the month of January at 96%, Booker T. Washington Primary, under the leadership of Ms. Kimber Esters is the recipient for February.

Tar Heel MS teacher organizes STEM fair

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students in Bladen County were given the opportunity to learn more about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

According to the Bladen County Schools website, Tar Heel Middle School recently held a STEM Career day, organized by science teacher David Wimert.

Representatives from DuPont Fayetteville Works and the National Weather Service were among some of the organizations that set up booths at the event.

Local STEM organizations like Bladen Soil and Water Conservation were also involved.

WBHS student running for NC Beta Club president

WBHS student running for NC Beta Club president

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A junior from West Bladen High School is running as a candidate for the NC Beta Club organization president, according to the Bladen County Schools website.

Zane Singletary will reportedly campaign against nine other students from across the state.

Fellow students, Beta club members, and school staff at West Bladen showed support for Singletary this week by wearing “Zane-y for Zane” t-shirts.

The election will take place during the Beta Club Convention in Greensboro, February 21-23.

Culinary instructor gives tips to students at WBHS

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students at West Bladen High School learned more about culinary arts Wednesday, according to the Bladen County Schools website.

Johnson and Wales University Culinary Instructor Chef Robert Penry was invited to share his expertise with the students in Mrs. Gail Marsh’s Foods class.

The chef gave students suggestions for their own food preparations and showed them the correct techniques for preparing and cooking food.

Penry also told students about classes and programs offered at Johnson and Wales University.
