Board of Education requests SRO grant approval

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Board of Education in Bladen County is requesting approval for a three-year COPS grant application for two schools to add resource officers.

Bladen County is eligible to apply for grant funding for only two SROs.

 The three-year grant application will total $272,540, which include a 25% local match of $68,135. The county will be required to pay 100% of the cost for the two positions in the fourth year.

School lunch prices approved for 2013-2014 school year

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Meal prices for students in Bladen County have been approved for the 2013-2014 school year after getting the green light from board members, according to the Bladen County School System’s website.

Prices for lunches are slightly higher than the previous school year -- the proposal for the prices was based on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and requested a price increase on paid and adult lunches. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act requires a price increase based on the USDA Lunch Paid Equity tool.

Bladen Co. schools adopt uniform policy for upcoming school year

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The school board in Bladen County announced Wednesday that students will be in uniforms when they return to school this fall.

According to spokesperson Valerie Newton, all students will be required to wear a school uniform daily, but each school has chosen its own standard uniform and colors that represent the school.

The school system decided to have students wear uniforms because of anecdotal evidence that points to a decrease in discipline and behavior problems amongst students.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An eighth grade student from East Arcadia School recently won the annual Bladen County Schools Spelling Bee, according to the Bladen County School system’s website.

Tamara Moore won after correctly spelling the winning word “rotisserie,” which gave East Arcadia its third consecutive win.

East Bladen alumni basketball game less than 2 weeks away

East Bladen alumni basketball game less than 2 weeks away

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The East Bladen Booster Club's alumni basketball game for former players of the old and new East Bladen High Schools is right around the corner, according to the Bladen County School System’s website.

The games will take place at the new East Bladen on Saturday, May 11.

Starting at 4 p.m., there will be a women’s basketball game, followed by the men’s game.

Bladen County schools receive signed books from author

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A New Bern author’s daughter recently donated some of her mom’s books to Bladen County schools, according to the school system’s website.

Mindy Goldsmith, a Bladen County resident, donated books authored by her mom, Joan Carris. Carris is planning on moving to Charlottesville, VA soon. To help with moving so many books, she decided to donate them to the school system.

Last varsity baseball game of season for East, West Bladen happens May 3

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’re a big baseball fan, you won’t want to miss East and West Bladen High School’s last varsity games of the season – the schools play against each other Friday, May 3, according to the schools’ websites.

The game will take place at West Bladen at 6 p.m.

West Bladen High is located at 1600 N. Carolina 410 in Bladenboro.
