Young horse died from mosquito-borne EEE illness

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Health departments across the state are sending warnings about Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The viral illness is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be deadly to humans and animals.

There have been seven EEE cases in North Carolina animals so far in 2012. One of the most recent was a 2 ½ year old Mini horse mare in Bladen County, according to Bladen Online. The horse was reportedly found lying down and unable to get up on July 18 and was euthanized later that day.

Animals can be vaccinated to prevent EEE. This horse had not been vaccinated.

The best defense for humans is by preventing mosquito bites.
