Bladen Community College sponsoring car wash fundraiser

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – What’s better than driving away in a shiny, clean car and helping a charity at the same time?

Bladen Community College’s Student Government Association will be hosting a car wash Friday to help out a nonprofit group, according to the school’s Facebook page.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the school's auditorium, and money raised will go towards the United Way.

Military members, firemen, cops sought to play in football game

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – West Bladen High School is seeking active duty and retired members of the military, along with police officers and firefighters, to play against the school’s football team for its Patriot Day Football Game to be held Sept. 11.

According to the Bladen County Schools website, a team of 20 is needed, and the game will be held at West Bladen High at 1:30 p.m.

Military members, veterans, firefighters and police officers who want to watch the game will be admitted for free.

Benefit bike ride to be held for family of deputy killed

Benefit bike ride to be held for family of deputy killed

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A benefit bike ride will be held Saturday for the family of a deputy who was killed in a fatal crash in June, according to the The Bladen Journal.

A Bike Ride for Dewayne Hester will be held at West Bladen High School from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The cost is $15 for single riders and $20 for double riders. The costs include a meal ticket (which are $7 each) and door prizes.

The public can purchase barbecue plates starting at 11:30 a.m.

A blood drive will be held at Purdie United Methodist Church, located at 11567 NC 87, according to the American Red Cross’ website.

Folks who choose donate can do so between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Help students in need by “Stuffing the bus” this week

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Local schools are asking residents to help “Stuff the Bus” with school supplies for students and classrooms in need.

According to the Bladen County Schools website, the “Stuff the Bus” program, in participation with the United Way, Walmart and Pepsi, school supplies can be donated on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot in Elizabethtown.

Minor-league football team headed to Bladen County

Minor-league football team headed to Bladen County

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new football team could be joining southeastern North Carolina. The Carolina Vipers, based in Elizabethtown, hope to launch their first season next fall.

The organization is holding an interest meeting in November at the Bladen County Recreational Center. They will talk about the future of the Carolina Vipers and discuss team tryouts.

According to organizers, the team’s mission is to “establish a strong community based minor-league football program in the Bladen County and surrounding areas.”

They plan to be part of the Appalachian Division of the Xtreme Conference of the Gridiron Developmental Football League.

The organization plans to gain financial backing from sponsors throughout the community.
