News release from Bladen County Emergency Services:

Residents of the Rowan Community of Bladen County will be able to sleep a bit easier with a new Fire District being established.  County officials are in the process of organizing the New District is obtaining the required building, equipment, and vehicles as required by the Office of the State Fire Marshall for it to be recognized as a Fire Station.  The New Station has obtained assistance from Kelly Volunteer Fire Department, the Bladen County Fire Marshall’s office and support of several local organizations, including the DuPont Fayetteville Works. Fayetteville Works, located on Highway 87, sold one if its older fire trucks to Bladen County at the minimal cost of $1.

Become a volunteer for domestic violence, assault victims

COLUMBUS and BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’d like to learn more about domestic violence, sexual assault or how to volunteer to help victims of both, a local domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy agency will hold a training session soon, according to The Bladen Journal.

Families First, which represents Bladen in Columbus counties, will host training sessions April 9, 16 and 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

High school's Agriculture Department donates fresh produce to needy

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The West Bladen High School Agriculture Department recently donated more than 60 bags of fresh produce to those in need, according to BladenOnline.com.

The produce came from a garden that was build adjacent to the school, owned by Wallace Brisson. The garden was prepared by William and Nelson Brisson, who created different types of rows and beds and donated more than 50 plants and four bags of fertilizer to the cause.

From there, West Bladen’s Horticulture I class planted collards, cabbage, lettuce, kale, rape, and turnips, and later processed and prepared the produce to distribute it.

“Pink Out” to take place at high school basketball game

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – To help raise cancer awareness, fans attending the upcoming East Bladen vs. West Bladen high school basketball games are encouraged to wear pink, according to The Bladen Journal.

The basketball games will be played Tuesday, Jan. 22 at East Bladen. There will be separate boys’ and girls’ JV games before the girls’ varsity game at 6 p.m. and the 8 p.m. varsity boys’ game.

Donations needed to provide Christmas presents to kids

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Bladenboro Police are organizing an event that will allow about 25 needy students at Bladenboro Primary School to receive Christmas presents, according to BladenOnline.com.

The police will work with school personnel to arrange a shopping trip for the kids, which is being paid for by donations, and more are needed.

A portion of the gifts will be clothing, but the kids will also be able to pick out some toys and games.

Gopsel choir benefit to be held Saturday night

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A gospel choir benefit will take place Saturday night, according to an event organizer.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome at Pleasant Grove United Holiness Church, where money raised will benefit Charles Bernard Jones, a cancer victim.

The church is located at 150 Church Drive in Elizabethtown.

The show begins at 6 p.m.

Haunted house to benefit fire department

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Just in time for Halloween, the White Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Camp Clearwater are hosting a haunted house this Friday and Saturday, as well as next Friday and Saturday at Camp Clearwater, according to the Bladen Journal.

Admission is $5, and money raised will go towards the White Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

The haunted house will reportedly begin at 9 p.m.
