BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Bladen County Sheriff Prentis Benston is letting his citizens know where he stands when it comes to the controversy over gun control.
The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office released a statement given the recent debate.
“Every North Carolina sheriff, upon assuming their office, took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of North Carolina,” Benston wrote.
“Of course, the sheriffs of North Carolina are committed to uphold their oath of office. It goes without saying that North Carolina sheriffs recognize that Amendment II of the Constitution provides that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” and that Amendment IV provides that “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated.”
Bladen County Sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Rodney Hester told WECT.com that Sheriff Benston is committed to the oath that he took as Sheriff of Bladen County.
A number of sheriffs across the state have released statements on how they feel given the recent debate over the rights of citizens and how they intend to enforce certain laws.
