Boil water advisory in effect for parts of Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – A precautionary boil water advisory is currently in effect for parts of Elizabethtown, according to town officials.

The advisory, issued Wednesday, covers South Poplar Street from Swanzy Street to Dunham Street, and South Poplar Street to Mercer Mill Road at Elizabeth Street.

A water main break prompted the advisory, and workers are currently trying fix the problem as soon as possible.

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – East Carolina University leaders are considering opening a dental community learning center in Southeastern NC.

According to Kim Smith, the health director at ECU, the university is considering putting a center in either Columbus, Bladen, or Brunswick counties.

Smith says that whichever county ECU ends up choosing, the school will pay for the building, but the county must donate two acres of land.

Bladen We Care receives $1,000 donation

Bladen We Care receives $1,000 donation

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Bladen We Care recently received a $1,000 gift from Cape Fear Farm Credit, according to Bladen Online.

Bladen We Care is a non-profit organization that raises and oversees the distribution of funds to provide healthcare assistance to patients in need in Bladen County.

The secretary for Bladen We Care told Bladen Online the organization is on track to spend about $50,000 this year. All of the money they collect goes directly back into the hands of the people who need assistance.

Bladen County drops in state health rankings

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released its 2012 health rankings for North Carolina and the results are not good for Bladen County.

Bladen County weighs in at number 97 in the list, falling one place from its 96th ranking in 2011.

The report is based on several factors, including lifespan, exercise habits, medical access and similar factors. 

The poor ranking in Bladen County is based in part on obesity, premature deaths and physical inactivity.

Flu shots being offered at Bladen Co. schools

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Because flu season has already kicked into high gear, flu shots will be offered at some are schools this week, according to the Bladen County Schools website.

Wednesday, officials with the Bladen County Health Department will be administering shots at Bladenboro Primary and Bladen Lakes Primary from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday, shots will be given at Clarkton School of Discovery and Tar Heel Middle School from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Families, children and staff can attend the clinics, and insurance information will not be required.

Cafeterias earn Golden A award

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Bladen County School’s cafeteria managers have been awarded the Golden A for operating first-rate cafeterias, according to the school system’s website.

The Bladen County Health Department Board of Health presented all thirteen school cafeterias with the honor.

According to Bladen County schools, a school cafeteria must score a grade of 97 or above on each inspection made between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.

This is the third year in a row the school cafeterias have received the Golden A award.

Seminar on Alzheimer’s to be held

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Want to learn more about Alzheimer’s? The Bladen County Division on Aging Senior Center will be hosting a seminar on the disease Thursday, Aug. 30, according to The Bladen Journal.

The event will be held at 3 p.m. at the Bladen Senior Center, which is at 608 McLeod Street in Elizabethtown.
