ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) - Fordham Britt has been named director of physician services for Southeastern Health. Britt is responsible for 32 primary and specialty care clinics within the Southeastern Health Physician Services network which throughout Bladen, Cumberland, Robeson and Scotland counties.

Church hosting blood drive Monday

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A community blood drive will be held at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church Monday, May 13, according to the Bladen Journal.

Donors are invited to arrive between 2 and 6:30 p.m. at 800 W. Broad Street.

The American Red Cross is hosting the event.

Elizabethtown nurse honored with Daisy Award

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) - Patricia Smith, RN, has always gone above and beyond while caring for her patients. In honor of her service, Smith has been awarded with Daisy Award for her commitment and compassion toward nursing.

A veteran of nursing, joined Bladen Healthcare in 1993. She previously worked for Bladen County Hospital in the Surgical Services Department. The Clarkton native was honored currently works as a Staff Nurse with the Birth Center at Bladen County Hospital.

The Daisy Award Foundation was created in 1999 to commemorate the death of J. Patrick Barnes, 33, who died following an eight-week hospitalization. The family wanted to show their gratitude to the nurses who cared for Barnes. The foundation partners with hospitals across the U.S. to identify and honor exceptional nurses who provide quality and compassionate care.

STUDY: Columbus Co. unhealthiest in NC...again

Once again, Columbus County falls at the bottom of the list, weighing in as the least-healthy county in the state.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new study ranks Columbus County as the unhealthiest county in North Carolina...again.

The University of Wisconsin released the rankings, which shows 37 percent of children in the county are living in poverty, compared to 25 percent statewide.

The study says 28 percent of its residents are in poor or fair health.

According to the study, Bladen County didn't do much better, and was only ranked two place higher than Columbus at #98.

Most of the unhealthiest counties are in southeastern or northeastern North Carolina. The healthiest counties tend to be clustered around cities.

Wake County was ranked the healthiest county in the state, and New Hanover County was ranked 9th. Pender County came in at #20 on the list and Brunswick at #37.

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) - If you’re looking to get rid of dated or unwanted medication, you can drop it off at an upcoming event, according to a news release.

Operation Medicine Drop allows folks to safely get rid of meds and aims to help people avoid unintentional poisoning from prescription medicine, which has been on the rise in NC.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 22, you can drop of any unwanted medicine in the Walmart parking lot in Elizabethtown.

Clarkton woman passes nursing exam, earning top credentials

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A Clarkton woman recently passed her Nursing Professional Development Certification Examination, according to a news release, giving her prestigious credentials.

Terri Duncan, RN, MSN-BC, who has more than 25 years of nursing experience, passed the test.

The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) is described as the world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization.

Bladen We Care sets dates for fundraising events

Bladen We Care sets dates for fundraising events

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Organizer with Bladen We Care have set dates for fundraising events that benefit residents in the area with health care grants.

According to a press release, a reverse raffle/auction/dance will be held April 12 at Lu Mil Vineyard, and a golf tournament is slated for April 25 at Carolina Sands Golf Course near White Lake.

Tickets for the dance are $100 per couple and are available at Fisher’s, Leinwand’s, and Campbell Oil Company’s Peanut Road office, all in Elizabethtown. They are also available from any Bladen We Care board member.

The press release says the reverse raffle has cash prizes of $2,000, $1,000 and $500.

Entry fee for the golf tournament is $500 per four-person team or $125 for individuals. According to a press release, each entry includes 18 holes of golf, lunch, gifts and raffles. Additional information is available by contacting members of Bladen We Care or Carolina Sands at 862-8796.
