School lunch prices approved for 2013-2014 school year

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Meal prices for students in Bladen County have been approved for the 2013-2014 school year after getting the green light from board members, according to the Bladen County School System’s website.

Prices for lunches are slightly higher than the previous school year -- the proposal for the prices was based on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and requested a price increase on paid and adult lunches. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act requires a price increase based on the USDA Lunch Paid Equity tool.

Time running out to enter Blueberry Cooking Contest

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’re planning on entering the annual Blueberry Cooking Contest that takes place during the Ammon Blueberry Festival, time is running out.

The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, according to The Bladen Journal.

First place winners from previous contests cannot enter the same recipe; however, second and third place winners in previous can enter the same recipe again this year.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A chef and culinary instructor recently shared some of his kitchen knowledge at West Bladen High School.

According to the Bladen County Schools website, Chef Robery Penry  stopped by Gail Marsh’s foods classes to show students correct cooking techniques and to give some tips.

Dublin Lions Club hosting BBQ plate sale, auction

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Dublin Lions Club will be hosting a barbecue plate sale and auction soon, according to The Bladen Journal.

The event will take place Friday, March 15 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the auction starting at 7 p.m.

It will be held at the Dublin Lions Club Building, and the cost is $7 per plate either to eat there or take out.

Culinary instructor gives tips to students at WBHS

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students at West Bladen High School learned more about culinary arts Wednesday, according to the Bladen County Schools website.

Johnson and Wales University Culinary Instructor Chef Robert Penry was invited to share his expertise with the students in Mrs. Gail Marsh’s Foods class.

The chef gave students suggestions for their own food preparations and showed them the correct techniques for preparing and cooking food.

Penry also told students about classes and programs offered at Johnson and Wales University.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Ducks Unlimited is hosting a banquet at Lu Mil Vineyard soon, according to the Ducks Unlimited website.

Tickets for the event include a one-year membership and subscription to Ducks Unlimited magazine, and there will be exclusive merchandise and prizes.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Elizabethtown-White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser soon, according to the organization’s website.

The event will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. at Front Porch Restaurant.
