Children’s book launch party to be held at library

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A book launch party will be held at the Bladen County Library Wednesday, according to The Bladen Journal.

W. Curt Vincent will read his book, The Luckiest Leaf, to children at 3 p.m. Kids who attend can also plant trees and enjoy refreshments.

Free summer meals for kids to be served soon

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – School will be ending soon for the year in Bladen County, but that doesn’t mean that meals will stop being served.

The Summer Feeding Program: Food is In when School is Out will be back in schools, providing children with free breakfast and lunch, according to the Bladen County school system’s website.

The program will begin at East Arcadia School June 17, and at Dublin Primary, Bladenboro Middle and Elizabethtown Primary June 23.

Elizabethtown nurse honored with Daisy Award

Elizabethtown nurse honored with Daisy Award

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) - Patricia Smith, RN, has always gone above and beyond while caring for her patients. In honor of her service, Smith has been awarded with Daisy Award for her commitment and compassion toward nursing.

A veteran of nursing, joined Bladen Healthcare in 1993. She previously worked for Bladen County Hospital in the Surgical Services Department. The Clarkton native was honored currently works as a Staff Nurse with the Birth Center at Bladen County Hospital.

The Daisy Award Foundation was created in 1999 to commemorate the death of J. Patrick Barnes, 33, who died following an eight-week hospitalization. The family wanted to show their gratitude to the nurses who cared for Barnes. The foundation partners with hospitals across the U.S. to identify and honor exceptional nurses who provide quality and compassionate care.

Astronaut Curt Brown to be inducted into Hall of Fame

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Houston, we have liftoff! Elizabethtown native and astronaut Curt Brown will be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on Saturday at the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex.

Brown will be joined by Eileen Collins and Bonnie Dunbar, Ph.D., the first time two females have been inducted at the same time.

Kelly Spring Festival kicks off soon

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Kelly Spring Festival will be held on Saturday, April 27 and WECT’s Rob Demetrious will be the grand marshal.

The parade kickoffs at 11 a.m., traveling down N.C. Hwy. 53 to Centerville Baptist Church.

Natmoore Road and Frenches Creek will be closed during the parade.

STUDY: Columbus Co. unhealthiest in NC...again

Once again, Columbus County falls at the bottom of the list, weighing in as the least-healthy county in the state.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new study ranks Columbus County as the unhealthiest county in North Carolina...again.

The University of Wisconsin released the rankings, which shows 37 percent of children in the county are living in poverty, compared to 25 percent statewide.

The study says 28 percent of its residents are in poor or fair health.

According to the study, Bladen County didn't do much better, and was only ranked two place higher than Columbus at #98.

Most of the unhealthiest counties are in southeastern or northeastern North Carolina. The healthiest counties tend to be clustered around cities.

Wake County was ranked the healthiest county in the state, and New Hanover County was ranked 9th. Pender County came in at #20 on the list and Brunswick at #37.
