NC Poet Laureate to speak at Bladen Community College

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students at Bladen Community College can learn more from a published poet Monday.

North Carolina’s Poet Laureate Joseph Bathanti will be a guest speaker in the school’s Writers Series program.

Bathanti is the author of six books of poetry, two novels, a book of short stories and a nonfiction book, according to BCC.

The poet was named North Carolina Poet Laureate by Governor Bev Perdue in October 2012.

According to the school’s weekly newsletter, the Writers Series brings guest authors to the campus throughout the year.

Bathanti’s lecture will be Monday morning at 11:00 in the library.

‘Ducky Dynasty’ stars will be in Bladen Co. this weekend

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Fans of A&E’s hit TV show Duck Dynasty will be able to meet two of its stars in person this weekend.

Phil Robertson and his wife Kay will be appearing at Elizabethtown Middle School Saturday, at 6 p.m., according to the Allen Brothers Hunting Preserve's website, the store that's hosting the event.

Nominations needed to recognize senior volunteers

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - If you know a "senior" whos like to volunteer their time, you have a chance to make sure they are recognized for their efforts.

Home Instead Senior Care is asking for nominations for the Salute to Senior Service Program. A nominee must be an adult who is 65 or older and who gives at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes.

Nominations will be accepted between Feb. 1 and March 31, 2013.

This is a statewide competition. State winners could go on to the national competition to ultimately win $5,000 for a charity of their choice.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Due to inclement weather, signups for Dublin Dixie Youth Baseball have been cancelled for Saturday, according to BladenOnline.com.

New sign up dates will be announced later.

Gardening program to take place soon

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about gardening, the Bladen County Master Gardener Volunteers are hosting a program soon.

According to the Bladen Journal, on Thursday, Feb. 7, the program will take place at the Bladen County Public Library in Elizabethtown at 6 p.m.

Topics of discussion include grape vine pruning, rooting and plant propagation.

Parent involvement day scheduled for Thursday

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Parents with questions about the new Common Core curriculum, your child's grades or attendance, or anything about the school system are invited to a parent involvement conference day Thursday.

The school distrcit has set aside this day for parents and family of students in pre-K to 8th grade to visit your child's school to learn more about curriculum, grades, and any other concerns.

Students will be out of school this day but schools will be open to parents and family beginning at noon for conferences and meet and greet. 

Call the school to schedule a time to visit.

Martin Luther King, Jr. parade scheduled for Monday

Martin Luther King, Jr. parade scheduled for Monday

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – Elizabethtown’s Martin Luther King, Jr. parade will take place Monday at 11 a.m., according to BladenOnline.com.

It will start in the Elizabethtown Municipal Building and will continue through downtown, and bands, floats, political leaders and more will all be featured.

After the parade, there will be a celebration at the P.A.C. Building at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church, which will include a program and free lunch.

The church is located at 800 West Broad Street.
