Spelling be to take place at Elizabethtown Primary School

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A countywide spelling bee will take place at Elizabethtown Primary School soon, according to the Bladen County School System’s website.

It will take place April 30 in the cafeteria at 6:30 p.m., while a light dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

The school is located at 301 Mercer Mill Rd.

Alumni basketball game will take place at East Bladen High

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The East Bladen Booster Club is hosting an alumni basketball game soon for former players of the old and new East Bladen High Schools, according to the Bladen County School System’s website.

The games will take place at the new East Bladen on Saturday, May 11.

Starting at 4 p.m., there will be a women’s basketball game, followed by the men’s game.

Walk of Honor ceremony to be held at National Guard Armory

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A ceremony honoring the loved ones, friends, and veterans of the United States will take place at the National Guard Armory in Elizabethtown.

According to a news release, the April 8 ceremony is being held to help raise donations for the Walk of Honor project as well as thanking those who have already made contributions to the project.

The Walk of Honor symbolizes the courage that the Bladen County soldiers kept as they fought in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Desert Storm.

Volunteer fire department holds rodeo

Volunteer fire department holds rodeo

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) - The Kelly Volunteer Fire Department is holding a rodeo this weekend.

The gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. The action starts at 7:00 p.m.

The rodeo will be held at the Lake Waccamaw Boys and Girls Home Arena.

Tickets are $10. Admission for children ages 4 to 11 is $5 and children 3 and under are free.

Sponsors wanted for upcoming 5K in Elizabethtown

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Praying for Crystal Abbott Coffman Foundation is hosting a 5k event in May to help raise money to support Coffmann.

According to the foundation, Coffman suffered a severe spinal cord injury last year while heading to her home in Leland. She swerved to avoid a deer that jumped out in front of her vehicle, ran off the road, and lost control.

The foundation is looking for businesses to sponsor the 5k for Crystal: Run, Walk, and Roll (wheelchairs). The event will be held at the Industrial Park in Elizabethtown on May 11, 2013 starting at 9:30 a.m. Deadline for sponsoring this event is April 15, 2013.

Pre-registration is also underway for participants for the event.

Jones Lake State Park to host Easter egg hunt

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Jones Lake State Park will host a big Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 30, according to whiteville.com

There will be games, kids activities, a corn hole tournament and prize eggs for each age group from 6 to 12-years-old, according to the site.

The event is free and open to the public; however, pre-registration ended on Saturday, March 23.

Become a volunteer for domestic violence, assault victims

COLUMBUS and BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’d like to learn more about domestic violence, sexual assault or how to volunteer to help victims of both, a local domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy agency will hold a training session soon, according to The Bladen Journal.

Families First, which represents Bladen in Columbus counties, will host training sessions April 9, 16 and 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
