CONTEST: Collector's calendar photo winners to receive $100 each

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) — Do you have photos of Bladen County, shots of beautiful sunrises, or pictures of breathtaking sites around the area? We want to see them…and we may even publish them in our 2012 calendar.

WECT is looking for 12 photos that will fill the 2012 WECT Collector’s Calendar. Each winner will receive $100 for their picture and will be featured in the calendar.

Entries are being accepted until Sunday, August 21 and only two entries per individual are allowed.

Submissions must be mailed to WECT 2012 Collectors Calendar Contest at 322 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, NC 28412 or dropped off at the front desk during normal business hours.

Residents urged to conserve water in Bladen County

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – Bladen County has been declared as being in extreme drought, according to a report on BladenOnline.com from Elizabethtown Public Services Director, Pat DeVane.

The report states that this level of drought requires the town to implement Phase 1 of the town’s Water Shortage Response Plan.

During this phase non-essential water uses will stop, such as water fountains, washing cars, and watering lawns.  Residents are urged to conserve water during this volunteer stage.

People caught using excessive water will receive a written notice of violation for the first offense, a $25 fine and a $25 fine for each offense after.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Eagles of East Bladen High will have a campus clean up day prior to the start of the new school year.

Community members, students and staff that would like to volunteer should meet on Saturday, August 13 at 8:30 a.m.

Reminder: No burning allowed in Bladen County

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – Despite the recent rainfall, the N.C. Forest Service and Brunswick County’s Fire Marshal, Scott Garner, are urging citizens to remember there is still a burning ban in place for many area counties.

The June 22 ban is still in effect for Bladen, Columbus, Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover counties.

More than 40 active wildfires are being worked on or monitored in the eastern portion of North Carolina, according to the forest service.

Bladen County company fined for violating Clean Water Act

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A company in Bladen County will have to pay a fine for violating the federal Clean Water Act, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Camp Clearwater Enterprises, Inc. was fined $38,000 for illegally filling wetlands on its property in White Lake.  The wetlands are adjacent to Colly Creek, which is a tributary of the Black River in Bladen County.

Between March 2009 and May 2010, Camp Clearwater representatives illegally discharged fill material into about 3/4 of an acre of wetlands while clearing a site for commercial development, according to the EPA.  The company did not have the required CWA Section 404 permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before starting the work.

Master Gardeners host plant sale in Elizabethtown

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) — A plant sale in Elizabethtown will be a part of the “Christmas in July” event, sponsored by the Bladen County Extension and Community Association.

According to the Bladen Journal, the Master Gardeners of Bladen County will hold a plant sale on Friday, July 15 at the Powell-Melvin Ag Center.

Shrubs, herbs, annuals and perennials will reportedly be available.

Town Council approves rezoning of two acres in Elizabethtown

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Elizabethtown Town Council approved a zoning map amendment request Monday, according to the Bladen Journal.

The amendment reportedly allows two acres of land located at Minter Lane and Thurman Drive to be rezoned from residential-agriculture to medium-density residential and manufacture home park.

Johnny McKoy, the property’s owner, requested the amendment.
