WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – As schools re-open for the year, we took a closer look at the salaries of area superintendents.
Superintendents' base pay is set using a state formula that includes their credentials and the enrollment in their districts.
They also receive supplements from their local boards of education.
The highest paid superintendent in the region is Tim Markley in New Hanover County, who makes $200,000. The enrollment in his district, more than 25,000, is also the highest.
On the other end of the scale is Alan Faulk, superintendent of Columbus County Schools, who earns $123,864. He makes the least compared with his area peers, even though his district is larger than Bladen County and Whiteville City Schools.
