BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office is working with residents in the community of Ammon to organize a community watch network.

The citizens will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14 at the Ammon Community Building, located at 120 Ammon Community Center Road in Garland, according to Captain Rodney Hester.

Refreshments will be served during the event and representatives from the Sheriff’s Office will be present to help facilitate the exchange, according to Hester.

Bolton men toss marijuana during traffic stop on county line

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A driver’s license check near the Columbus County line nabbed two men from Bolton for drug-related offenses.

Bladen County Sheriff’s Deputies were conducting a check on N.C. Hwy. 211 East near the county line around 9 p.m. on Tuesday when a vehicle turned around upon seeing the checking station, according to Captain Rodney Hester. While stopping the 2008 blue Chevrolet Silverado, deputies reportedly saw the driver throw a white plastic bag out of the window. The bag was retrieved and Hester said that it contained marijuana. Deputies recovered over two ounces of marijuana and a small amount of cocaine.

Randy Jerome Jacobs, 26, and Gary Wayne Jacobs, 30, were arrested. They were each charged with possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, manufacturing marijuana and felony possession of cocaine.

Randy Jacobs was also charged with maintaining a vehicle for controlled substances and was still in the Bladen County Jail under a $12,500 secured bond at the time of this post. Gary Jacobs was released after posting a $7,500 secured bond.

Three men arrested, facing assault and intimidating a witness charges

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Two men were charged with assault and a 38-year-old man is facing an intimidating a witness charge in Bladen County.

A “serious” assault occurred on April 3 that involved a victim sustaining a broken arm and needing 16 stitches to close a head injury, according to Captain Rodney Hester with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

Elizabethtown resident Lashan Tatum, 27, was recently charged with felony assault inflicting serious injury and possession of marijuana in jail. Tatum was in the Bladen County Jail under a $200,000 secured bond at the time of this post.

Meredith Jaquan Cromartie, 21, was also charged with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury and was booked under a $75,000 secured bond.

Shawn Lindbergh Melvin, of Elizabethtown, was charged with intimidating a witness on Tuesday. Hester said that Melvin wanted the victim to drop all charges against Tatum and Cromartie. At the time of this post, Melvin was in the Jail under a $1 million secured bond and a $348.33 cash bond for failing to pay child support.

High-speed chase jumps county line, bags thrown out of car contained drugs

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Bladen County Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a high-speed chase Tuesday night that crossed into a neighboring county.

The chase began when a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper tried to pull a vehicle over for speeding on Owen Hill Road near Dublin, according to Captain Rodney Hester with the Sheriff’s Office. The suspect took off on Hwy. 87 and the sheriff’s office was called in to help. When the vehicle crossed into Cumberland County, deputies stopped their chase. Troopers continued following the car and arrested 19-year-old Kevin Leon Hill.

Hill, of the 3000 block of Bridle Street in Fayetteville, was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and injury to personal property. He was booked into the Bladen County Jail under a $5,500 secured bond.

Hester said that three black trash bags were thrown out of the car near Tar Heel Middle School. The bags contained drugs and burglary tools.

The vehicle was reportedly seized and taken to Eddie Jacobs Towing in Bladen County.

Woman arrested for selling drugs near school

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman was arrested Tuesday for selling drugs near a school.

Undercover officers say they bought Diazepam and Carisoprodol from Linda Atkins in October 2011, and that the purchase was not during school hours.

Atkins was charged Monday, and faces the following charges:

  • Selling and delivering Diazepam on school property
  • Selling schedule IV controlled substance, Diazepam
  • Delivering a sch IV controlled substance, Diazepam
  • Dispensing medication without a license

Currently, Atkins is in the Bladen County Jail under a $5,500 bond.

Fight with girlfriend's mother leads to arrest of 22-year-old man in Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – Elizabethtown Police officers were dispatched to the Days Inn on East Broad Street this weekend after a disturbance with shots fired was reported.

Officers arrived around 1 p.m. on Saturday to find a suspect outside the Days Inn with a pistol in his hand, according to Elizabethtown Police Department Chief Robert Kinlaw. They were able to convince the subject to surrender the pistol and officers took 22-year-old Charles Kenzell Carter into custody without incident.

Officers reportedly learned that Carter and his girlfriend had been staying at the Days Inn. The mother of Carter’s girlfriend went to the hotel and found her daughter had been assaulted.

The mother and Carter got into an altercation, Kinlaw said, and he produced a gun. As she fled the scene, the mother said she heard a gunshot.

When officers took Carter into custody, they found approximately 32 grams of marijuana in his pocket. He was charged with injury to real property, going armed to the terror of the public, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession with the intent to sell or deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling to keep or sell marijuana, and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Carter was in the Bladen County Jail at the time of this post with a $1,505,000 secured bond. The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crime.
