Man, mother charged after police search residence, find drugs

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) - Officers with the Elizabethtown Police Department and Bladen County Sheriff's Office assisted officers with the NC Probation and Parole with a warrantless search Wednesday evening, which resulted in a man and his mother being charged with drug possession.

Officers say Akeem Jamel Brown, 23, who lives in the 1000 of Martin Luther King Dr., is on probation for a felony conviction of fleeing to elude arrest and is subject to warrantless searches. 

During the warrantless search, officers located 1.5 grams of crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana inside the residence. Officers took Brown into custody, secured the residence and obtained a search warrant for the premises. 

Update: Thousands of dollars seized in drug raid

Deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office and agents from the NCSBI, Chadbourn Police Department, and the Bladen County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant Wednesday at Harold's Body Shop.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Court documents show deputies seized $8,174, a gun, box of sandwich bags, digital scales, a Wells Fargo receipt, Ziploc bag with marijuana, a surveillance system, Dell computer, and thumb drive from Harold's Body Shop in Chadbourn last Wednesday.

Dozens of Deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, agents from the NCSBI, and Chadbourn Police Department executed the search warrant.

They also searched Larry McKenzie's home. McKenzie owns Harold's Body Shop.

According to Sheriff Chris Batten, the warrants stem from an extensive investigation after several complaints from citizens in and around Chadbourn about suspicious activity at the business and home.

Investigators said Harold's Body Shop was the meeting place for drug deals all over the county.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Elizabethtown Police Department and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office collected more than 13,000 dosages of medication at a recent Operation Medicine Drop event, according to a news release.

Between March 28 and 24, more than 230 of the events took place across the state as part of an effort to collect and destroy expired and unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Operation Medicine Drop is an effort among the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Safe Kids North Carolina, the State Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Riverkeepers of NC and local groups.

More than 490 traffic, criminal violations made in Bladen Co.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) –A total of 492 traffic and criminal violations were made recently in Bladen County.

A news release from an NC Department of Transportation spokesperson revealed that, across the state, 3,147 motorists were cited for driving while impaired during a holiday “Booze It & Lose It” campaign that ran from Dec. 7 to Jan. 2.

Additionally, 110,692 traffic and criminal citations, 6,381 safety belt and 1,134 child passenger safety violations, 364 speeding violations and 3,543 drug charges were issued statewide.

Alleged illegal liquor house bust leads to 4 being charged

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – Four people face charges in connection to an illegal liquor house in Elizabethtown that was shut down by North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agents recently, according to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

According to the news release, on New Year’s Eve, ALE agents shut down the house in the 110 block of Robin Drive, seizing 206 liters of beer, 17 liters of wine, 37 liters of spirituous liquor, $933 in U.S. currency, an ounce of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a handgun and five widescreen LED TVs.

The home’s renters, Reginald Tatum, 40, and his wife, Savonne, 46, were both charged.

Man pulled over for not having insurance, cited for drugs

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Authorities cited a man from
Whiteville with drug-related charges after being stopped near Booker T
Washington School Road.

According to officials, Cody Ryan Sasser, 30 of Whiteville,
was driving on NC 211 when he was pulled over for not having insurance on his
vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana, cigar blunts
used to smoke marijuana and an open container of beer. Authorities say he was
released on citations for those charges, in addition to failing to have
insurance.

CHARGED: Man sells drugs to undercover agents

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man in Elizabethtown is facing charges after selling marijuana to undercover agents.

According to Captain Rodney Hester, officers with the Bladen County Sheriff's Office, Elizabethtown Police Department, White Lake Police Department and NC ALE worked together to execute a search warrant of David Allen Mathis' home.

The search warrant stemmed from undercover operations at the home after several citizens complained of drug activity in the area. Hester said the Bladen County Sheriff's Office Narcotic unit made controlled purchases of marijuana from Mathis within the last 30 days.

According to Hester, investigators found marijuana, digital scales, baggies, marijuana and other items of evidence during execution of the search warrant.

Mathis was charged with:

-Possession With Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana.

-Manufacture Marijuana.
