Elizabethtown man faces B&E charges

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – A man has been charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of stolen property.

According to a spokesperson for the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, authorities responded to a reported break-in on Oliver Lane on Wednesday. The deputy responding to the scene noticed new tire tracks nearby, and followed them to a residence on US 701 N.

There, they found the home of 24-year-old Roman Blake Barnes. Barnes admitted to breaking into the residence through the back door, as well as taking items from the home.

Barnes currently remains in the Bladen County Jail under a $3,000 bond.

The property taken from the break-in has since been recovered.

Man charged with assault on a gov. official following incident with golf club

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man from Riegelwood has been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and resisting arrest, according to Captain Rodney Hester with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

Wednesday, authorities were dispatched to a domestic call at the home of 57-year-old Joseph Lewis Branch, in the 70 block of Graham Blanks Road.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they say Branch came out of the home holding a golf club in a threatening manner. Deputies told Branch to put down the golf club several times.

When Branch complied, he then tried to go back into the home, and a deputy physically subdued the suspect to prevent him from doing so.

Authorities say Branch, who had been drinking alcohol, was intoxicated.

He is currently in the Bladen County Jail under a $4,000 bond.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A 31-year-old man, who broke into a home in the Tarheel area, left his cell phone in the residence before fleeing on N.C. Hwy. 87 in the wrong direction, according to Captain Rodney Hester with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

A Tarheel resident came home to find an unknown man in his residence around 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The suspect drove off in a black Honda passenger car, Hester said.

When a deputy spotted the vehicle, it was traveling on the wrong side of the highway, and the deputy had to drive into the median to avoid a collision. The deputy ended up stopping the vehicle near Richardson and Son Grocery.

Domestic dispute leads to knife fight, patrol vehicle damage

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A domestic dispute left two people injured and a Bladen County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle damaged.

Authorities said they were called to the 100 block of Smith Cabin Road in Garland around 5:45 p.m. on Monday. When they arrived, they found Erika Williams Pearson, 31, with a cut on her hand and James Anthony Hunt, 26, with knife wounds on his back and chest area, according to Captain Rodney Hester. The wounds were not deep and EMS personnel treated them both at the scene after they both refused to be taken to the hospital.

Pearson told authorities that when she attempted to leave after an argument, Hunt grabbed a bag from her shoulder so she cut him with a knife. Once Hunt was put into a patrol vehicle to be taken to the magistrate’s office, Hester said, Hunt began beating his head against the rear window, causing minor damage.

Detectives find more than 100 marijuana plants growing in nearby field

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Detectives with the Bladen County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit found nearly 200 marijuana plants growing in a field.

An anonymous tip led officers to the plants in Tar Heel.  They were growing in a grassy area by the Bladen-Robeson line.

The plants had a street value of about $210,000 and were cut down and destroyed last week.

No arrests have been made in connection to the growing operation.

Man charged in connection to murder could face life in prison

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man charged in connection to a murder in Wilmington made his first court appearance on Monday.

U.S. Marshals arrested Terrell Robinson at a home in the 200 block of Dunham Street in Elizabethtown last week.

He was wanted in connection to the murder of 22-year-old David McPhatter, of Riegelwood. McPhatter died after a shooting in the 800 block of Castle Street during a fight in May.

District Court Judge Sandra R. Criner read the charges against Robinson Monday morning and explained that he could face life in prison.

Robinson decided to go with a court-appointed attorney. He is being held in the New Hanover County Jail with no bond.

Another suspect, 20-year-old Cody Gurrero, turned himself in a few days after the shooting.

INVESTIGATION: Vehicle taken from business in Clarkton

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Investigators in Bladen County are trying to determine who took a vehicle from a business early Tuesday morning.

According to Captain Rodney Hester with the sheriff’s office, a vehicle, along with assorted tools, was stolen from E.J. Cox Processing off of US 701 Business in Clarkton.

Hester said a white, 2008 Chevrolet Silverado with vehicle registration #DE7032 was taken after the business was broken into.
