Dare Claire: Viewers dare Claire to be part of a Flash Mob

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - This week on WECT's Carolina in the Morning, viewers are daring reporter Claire Hosmann to try some rather unusual things.

The requests for dares went out earlier this month on the station's Facebook page.

The first dare to happen was beaver trapping. Viewer Jefferson Weaver submitted the challenge, so Hosmann went to join him one morning in Kelly, Bladen County.

Once there, she learned where to lay traps, what kinds of scents are used to entice the animals, and why many people find it necessary to do.

Weaver says the beavers are a pest to farmers, because they can cause the land to overfill with water. Coyotes are also dangerous because they will eat livestock and even go after domestic animals such as cats and dogs.

Students give up textbooks for tablets at East Bladen High

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – East Bladen High School students are giving up their textbooks for a much better upgrade.

Bladen County Schools rolled out brand new Lenovo tablets to about 90 students on Thursday. Students and their parents were briefed on how to use the tablets that are being funded by the Golden Leaf Foundation.

Many were excited to use the tablets for class and homework as a part of the pilot program.

“I guess we’re supposed to use it first because we’re kind of like the guinea pigs,” said tenth grader Leighanne Kelly. “I like it though. It might be a lot to keep up with, but it’s going to be easier than carrying around a lot of books at the same time.”

Right now, 180 students are a part of the pilot program. School officials say, next year every student will take home a tablet.

The radios are called EF Johnsons, and the money to upgrade is needed by the end of March.

When divided, the individual cost of each radio is about $200.
