ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) - Fordham Britt has been named director of physician services for Southeastern Health. Britt is responsible for 32 primary and specialty care clinics within the Southeastern Health Physician Services network which throughout Bladen, Cumberland, Robeson and Scotland counties.

Bladen leaders consider sales tax increase

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Leaders in Bladen County will continue discussions of a proposed sales tax increase in the county.

County commissioners are considering the approval of a quarter cent sales tax increase.

According to NCACC information, voters have supported  sales tax increase in 25 of the 90 counties where referendums have been held.

An additional quarter cent would generate an estimated $325,000 in additional annual revenue.

'Click it or Ticket' campaign celebrates 20 years

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Monday, May 20th marks the 20th anniversary of North Carolina DOT “Click or Ticket” campaign.

According to the press release, North Carolina was the first state to launch this safety program in 1993.

The release also states, The Click it or Ticket campaign runs through Memorial Day weekend and ends on June 2nd.  During this time officers will cite driver’s state wide who do not buckle up.

Board of Education requests SRO grant approval

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Board of Education in Bladen County is requesting approval for a three-year COPS grant application for two schools to add resource officers.

Bladen County is eligible to apply for grant funding for only two SROs.

 The three-year grant application will total $272,540, which include a 25% local match of $68,135. The county will be required to pay 100% of the cost for the two positions in the fourth year.

WEATHER: Heavy rainmaking thunderstorms

Grab the umbrella for sure today, as showers and thunderstorms will soak our area into the afternoon. 

While severe weather is not likely, some good old fashioned gully washers are - as the atmosphere moistens to a typical summer type scenario. 

That means low visibility and some roadway flooding concerns this morning are likely as heavy rain falls in swaths across southeastern North Carolina.

Some rumbles of thunder and gusty conditions are possible, particularly as we head in to the warmer hours this afternoon.

High temps remain a bit cooler today with the added cloud cover.  Look for most spots to near 80F.  Some spots may pull in an inch of precipitation.

ADA to be sworn in as a new judge

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Bladen County’s Superior Court will get a new judge this week.

Ebern T. Watson, III, who most know as “Tripp,” is taking on his duties as judge at 3:00 Friday afternoon.

Right now, Watson is an assistant district attorney for Bladen County. He was appointed to the judge position by Governor Pat McCrory two weeks ago.

WEATHER: Super summery weekend forecast

Ready for the weekend?  It looks like beach goers and pool rats will be excited for the forecast. 

The Bermuda high off of the western Atlantic will continue to keep conditions mostly sunny and mild, however with enough moisture in place, as the weekend rolls on - we will return to the typical summer pattern where an afternoon shower or thunderstorm pops up along the sea breeze. 

Look for an afternoon high today in the upper 80s.

Temperatures will cool slightly (down to the mid 80s) for the weekend, with a bit of a better chance for showers during the early work week.
